Staying in Place

Remain In Me. (John 15:5-8)

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.”

Immediately I am reminded of when Jesus speaks in John 13:35 of when Jesus proclaims they will know you are my disciples by your love. Is this what Jesus is speaking of here? Is he reaffirming that love is the fruit of the disciples or is he talking about the fruits of the Spirit?

Obviously there is a loose connection here, love no matter shape or form is always rooted in Jesus and reveals Christ. However, here in John we should not assume that this passage is connected to John 13 or Galatians 5, but rather what Jesus is trying to communicate in John 15 is that fruit is produced through intimacy with him. This fruit comes from remaining in the vine. The word “remain” literally means in the Greek to “to stay in place.” The metaphor that Jesus is painting here is that fruit will be produced out of a believers life if they will recognize that what proceeds the action of love is an intimacy with the Father. This fruit only comes with “staying in place” listening to Jesus words and praying in Jesus name for his kingdom to come. For the believer bearing fruit is high dependent on intimacy with Jesus. Today before you go out and try to live for Jesus and produce fruit, before you attempt to bring witness to Jesus’ name----would you “stay in place” and get to know Jesus’ heart and take time to pray in Jesus’ name for his kingdom to come through you. The fruit Jesus describes here is the product of effective prayer in Jesus’ name! It might even be a good practice to spend some time around the Lord’s Prayer as you get your day rolling.
